Background

Venki has over 18 years of research experience in the field of plant science. At UCR, she started as a post - doctoral researcher at Botany and Plant Sciences (BPSc) department and worked on plant developmental biology. As an assistant specialist at Plant Transformation Research Center (PTRC), she developed Genetically Modified Crops (GMCs) for various academic institutions and international agro-industries. She also trained undergraduate students, international scholars and researchers both in laboratory and biological safety procedures. As a staff research associate for BPSc, she managed the research laboratory and teaching program for the Dynamic Genome Course. She also supervised undergraduate students. Prior coming to UCR she held a post-doctoral position at the University of Arizona and worked on plant genomics.

Description

Venki is part of a team that will implement the campus laboratory safety program activities and assist department laboratory personnel in addressing safety issues. She will ensure personnel are familiar with safety protocols, knowledgeable of laboratory-specific procedures and resources. Venki will also conduct laboratory safety inspections, hazard assessments and coordinate with departments participating in the self-audit program. She will identify and recommend corrective actions where necessary; assists departments in implementation of corrective actions. Assist in the development and delivery of safety training regarding topics including but not limited to: hazardous chemical storage and handling, use of online laboratory management applications, emergency equipment evaluations, UC laboratory safety policies, hazardous waste management and standard operating procedures.
