Background

Maria Elisa is a microbiologist with extensive research experience working in biosafety level (BSL) 2 and 3 laboratories at several high-profile scientific and educational institutions. Throughout her career, she has led many projects of varying complexity, managed grants, organized training courses, and provided technical instruction to college students and support personnel. Lately in her career, she has conducted laboratory inspections focused on compliance with regulations and guidelines; on safety; on security; and on maintenance and operations. She is proficient in biosafety, biosecurity and operations of high-containment laboratories, as well as in CDC Select Agent regulations, and has served as the Alternate Responsible Official for universities and government laboratories.

Description

Maria Elisa provides technical expertise and regulatory guidance to BSL3 researchers and staff regarding Select Agent projects as part of the biosafety program at EH&S. She develops, writes, and updates laboratory-specific policies and SOPs for general, specific, and high-containment laboratories to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. She assists research investigators in obtaining the necessary permits and authorizations related to Select Agent possession, use, and transfer, in collaboration with the biosafety program. Maria Elisa schedules, coordinates, and manages operations for all high-containment laboratories and remains on-call 24hrs a day for emergency consultations and response.
