Background

Dr. Vernon has over 24 years of experience in Academic Laboratory & Research Safety. Prior to coming to UCR he served as a Lecturer at UCSD, Chemistry & Biochemistry department where he also managed the teaching laboratory safety program; he also held a postgraduate researcher position at Scripps Institution of Oceanography investigating colloids in the ocean. His doctoral work was in the field of structural, physical organic chemistry. He as been at UCR since February of 1999. Prior to the role of Director, Dr. Vernon served in the role of Laboratory / Safety Research Manager and Integrated Waste Manager.

Description

Dr. Vernon supports the teaching and research mission of the campus through innovative and strategic leadership of a campuswide environmental, health and safety practice. He strives to provide excellent service to all members of the campus community including faculty, staff, students and affiliates. As the Director, he has oversight and lead responsibility for campus compliance to applicable laws and regulations, key environmental, health, and safety program implementation. He provides leadership and encourages collaboration on EH&S issues amongst campus departments, UC campuses, and universities throughout the nation.
