Environmental Health
| Environmental health focuses on the aspects of human health and disease and their relation to environmental factors. The program addresses all the physical, chemical, and biological factors that are external to people, and the related factors which impact behaviors. Several famous cases in this area include Erin Brockovich, Taco Bell e.coli outbreak of 2006, death of nine year old boy swimming in Lake Elsinore in 2008, and the swine flu. Recent cases involve a mumps outbreak at UC Berkeley, and a Tuberculosis (TB) case at UCR. Environmental health affects your daily life, and often operates behind the scenes conducting restaurant inspections, swimming pool inspections, food safety training, water quality testing, food permits, and a myriad of other services in an effort to keep you healthy and safe. | ![]() H1N1 flu |
Food Quality
Restaurants
Restaurant inspections are conducted a minimum of twice yearly with a letter grade assigned to the restaurant after the inspection. The restaurant grades are similar to academic grades with an A being the best score and a C being the lowest score. A copy of the inspection report is maintained by Dining Services or the private restaurant manager.
Organizations and Departments
All organizations and departments (including faculty, students, or staff) who wish to provide food to the public (for free or for sale) must obtain a temporary Food Permit prior to the event. Prior to applying for the permit, each individual who will be preparing and/or distributing food must complete Food Safety Training.
Food Vendors
Outside food establishments who plan to prepare and handle food on campus to our community and public must bring a hard copy of the following documents prior to serving food at any event:
1. Current Environmental Health permit from the county where they do business, and
2. Food Safety training for all food handlers who will be involved in the food process on campus
Please be advised that EH&S will review and inspect your facility prior to start of the activities For more information please contact Purchasing (951) 827-3005 or the Registered Environmental Health Specialist (951) 827-2648.

Swimming pools are to be maintained safe through proper filtration methods, disinfection and disinfectant residue levels, good repair to shell and deck, and adequate lighting and fixtures. Swimming pool inspection reports are maintained by the pool operator. For more information about the federal regulations for main drain covers in all pools and spas, refer to the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Safety Act.
Water Quality
Water quality tests are performed periodically and upon new construction completion! Review the annual Water Quality Report 2008 published by the City of Riverside. Archived reports are also available from the City.
